| On Wednesday, Donald Trump became the third president in history to be impeached by the United States Congress. We took the occasion to look for contemporary perspectives on the last time a president was impeached. In a collection from the late Rep. Dan Rostenkowski (D-IL, 1959-1995), we found a VHS tape with a note thanking him for participating in the Kurtis Productions investigative report, “War on the Presidency: The Road to Impeachment.” The program is a fascinating look back at a very different political era. Kurtis frames the Clinton impeachment as a clash between the “moral relativists” in the Democratic Party, and the “moral absolutists” in the Republican Party, who claimed that a president lying was something their party could never abide. |
