July 2016: Celebrating ten years of Media Burn online
It’s been ten years since we launched mediaburn.org. Since then, our videos have been viewed in almost every country in the world, by more than 13 million people.
This photo was taken on July 6, 2006, at the newly unveiled Cloud Gate (“the Bean”) sculpture at Millennium Park as our core group prepared for the official launch of mediaburn.org, which was nearly three years in the making.

Since then, the physical archive has nearly doubled, from about 4,000 videotapes initially to 7,000 today, and the digitized content has increased more than seven-fold, from 400 to 3,000 videos, each curated, thoroughly logged, and available free online.
To celebrate these ten years of accomplishments, we’re highlighting a rare ½” videotape that we were able to restore and save. This quirky and playful video experiment by Nick Despota documents America in its bicentennial year, 40 years ago. “Bicentennial Quiz” was transferred by Specs Bros, which was made possible through grants from the NHPRC and the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation.
The full version of “Bicentennial Quiz” can be viewed in its entirety, along with two other charming pieces by Nick Despota from the mid-seventies, at mediaburn.org.
