In this raw tape, Skip Blumberg shoots on the streets of New York for The 90’s, asking people about the upcoming presidential election. At the same time, Danny Schechter and a camera crew shoot Skip for a Globalvision video training tape. Most of the tape is Skip shooting Schechter’s crew as they interview him. Skip gives simple and clear explanations of the principles that guide his shooting (i.e., one should not look through the viewfinder but should instead learn to shoot without thinking about it).
Three industrial films from the 1940s and ’50s that feature Studs Terkel. In an excerpt from “Beginning to Date” (1953) Terkel plays a high school diving instructor and offers advice to students on proper dating etiquette. The second film on this tape, “No Vacancies” (1946), is about the crisis that plagued many returning WWII soldiers who could not afford housing. Terkel is the narrator in this piece and for the final piece, “The Living City” (1953), which deals with urban issues.
Raw footage for the award-winning series The 90’s. Activists demonstrate in the streets of San Francisco demanding more research to fight AIDS. The camera is pretty passive and the sound is bad, so it’s pretty hard to tell what’s going on; the tape is mostly just shots of police and people standing around shouting.
Raw footage for “Chicago Slices,” a television series about life in Chicagoland. This video features the end of videomaker Skip Blumberg’s interview with Ray Still, retiring oboist for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, who demonstrates how to tie a reed for the oboe.
For Nintendo-compatible games. Members of the U.S. National Video Game Team show tricks and preview new games. Interesting only for the few seconds where you get to see the team members and laugh at them. Also potentially interesting for people who want to watch others play video games from 1989 and/or learn tricks for those games.
Compilation episode of Image Union featuring “Defense for Atomic Attack” by Allen Ross of Chicago Filmmakers, clips from “Media Burn” by Ant Farm, and “The Pope’s Visit” by Joseph McGarry.
