Documentation of attempts to maintain a block in Uptown Chicago.
This video was recorded in Uptown, Chicago. It was a victory for the O.N.E’s Community Task Force to have the District Police Commander Terry Gabinski, come to a community meeting. Everyone from the community had an opportunity to voice their concerns on empty lots, vacant burnt-out buildings and crime in their neighbourhood.
This video is one of three and was recorded during a retreat in Woodstock, Illinois where the Chicago Area Project (C.A.P.), organised a weekend gathering to reflect on their past accomplishments and plan for the next year.
Footage of housing issues in Chicago. This tape features two segments, one looking at porch repair and another at electrical upgrades to a building’s intercom system.
A short documentary about Organization of the Northeast (O.N.E.), a community group fighting Chicago’s housing court to keep affordable housing in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood, which was facing rapid gentrification. The piece is followed by raw footage of Mayor Michael Bilandic addressing a group of senior citizens about the energy concerns of the city of Chicago.
This tape documents abandoned buildings in Chicago’s Uptown and Edgewater neighborhoods and discusses the dangers associated with them. Roberta Westmore of One Land Use Action, a subsidiary of the Organization of the Northeast, leads the camera through the various violations at several buildings. This is followed by raw footage of a city hearing on mortgage redlining by local banks in Uptown, and then footage of a tenants meeting.
This tape features a ten minute edited version of the Studs Terkel memorial service that took place on January 30, 2009 at the Chicago Cultural Center. The video offers a brief summary of the night, highlighting some of the stand-out moments of the event. Nearly five hundred people gathered to honor Terkel’s memory. Good friends and colleagues share their personal stories and thoughts on Terkel’s life and legacy. Terkel’s son, Dan Terkell, also shares a few kind words about his father.
This tape documents the Celebration of the Life of Studs Terkel held at the Chicago Cultural Center on January 30, 2009. Over four hundred people gathered for this occasion to pay tribute to Terkel’s life and work. Studs’ close friends, admirers, and colleagues share their stories about the man and the life he lived. Terkel’s son, Dan Terkell, also says a few words about his father at the end of the evening.
