| Yesterday was Columbus Day, a holiday celebrating Columbus’s discovery of the Americas, which continues to face opposition from those who feel it ignores much of the troubled history between Native Americans and the European explorers and colonists.
With respect to this history, we present this recently preserved footage of Mike Chosa, a member of the Chippewa tribe who worked as a Native American activist for much of his life within the Midwest, particularly in Chicago and from his home in Lac du Flambeau, WI. He was a well-respected elder and member of the Lac du Flambeau Tribal Council when he passed away on April 18, 2012, at the age of 76.
This footage comes from a series of tapes recorded in 1976 by Communications for Change, an early Chicago video group set up to provide a forum to people who ordinarily didn’t have one. The three tapes in our collection, titled the American Indian Experience, were recently preserved and transferred through the BAVC Preservation Access Program. |
