On June 12, 1982, the largest antinuclear demonstration was held in New York City’s Central Park, while a simultaneous demonstration was held in San Francisco at its Civic Center. Estimates of over one million people attended the New York demonstration, making it the largest American political demonstration in history at that time.

Independent producers, dozens from across the United States, gathered to broadcast the event, providing live news coverage for public stations as an alternative to network television.

People were interviewed on the street about their opinions on the nuclear arms race and disarmament. Responses were polarized.
