This tape features raw footage for the award-winning series “The 90’s.” Videomakers Jody Procter and Judith Binder visit Midnight Mission, a soup kitchen and advocate for the poor in Los Angeles. They interview employees about how the meals are prepared, and speak with a few of the patrons about their situations. However, their main focus is the food, and most of the tape concerns the process of making and serving it. In contrast, Procter and Binder visit Asylum, an extremely upscale restaurant. The owner talks about his influences, the cuisine, and the decor. They also talk to the pastry chef and bread baker and watch the head chef, Guy Leroy, prepare an unusual salmon dish.
In this raw tape, Skip Blumberg shoots on the streets of New York for The 90’s, asking people about the upcoming presidential election. At the same time, Danny Schechter and a camera crew shoot Skip for a Globalvision video training tape. Most of the tape is Skip shooting Schechter’s crew as they interview him. Skip gives simple and clear explanations of the principles that guide his shooting (i.e., one should not look through the viewfinder but should instead learn to shoot without thinking about it).
Ben Hollis goes to the Tri-Taylor neighborhood to interview Chicago residents about an activity everyone shares: sitting on stoops and talking. Most memorably, a man who has lived on Taylor Street for over 60 years reminisces about being a precinct captain and expresses his loyalty to Richard J. Daley while his companions eat Italian Ice.
