  Studs’ Place: Teen Job

  “Teen Job,” an episode of “Studs’ Place,” shows a tension between young, newly-hired Johnny and his mother, Marie. Marie wants only what’s best for her son, and in this amounts to Johnny spending his vacation in relaxation. Marie confronts Studs and asks him to fire Johnny so he won’t buy a hot rod and, potentially, put himself in danger. Studs conceded, but soon they find out what sort of intentions Johnny actually has. Also featuring musical performances by Chet and Win.

  It’s a Living: The Unemployment Line

  Part of the “It’s a Living” series created by Videopolis based on Studs Terkel’s book Working, which focuses on workers in Chicago. This tape is the record of a single hour at the state unemployment compensation office in Logan Square on the city’s northwest side. People in the line talk about what it’s like to be out of work as they deal with bureaucratic entanglements of their cases. As the program progresses, a family finally receives the check they needed to survive–after eight attempts.

This tape unfolds practically in real-time in the bowels of the Chicago & Northwestern Railway Station. It features discussion and interaction with the workers on newspaper delivery trucks and railway workers wheeling wagons to commuter trains.

  A documentary about a day in the life of a Sears mail order catalog facility in Chicago, where the disconnect between workers and management is striking. The management seems to be entirely white and male, while the workers are black and female. The tape was produced as part of the “It’s a Living” series of videos on working in America.
