Raw tape for The 90's election special.
Tom Weinberg goes to Washington University in St. Louis to shoot the first of three presidential debates.
0:00 Weinberg shoots David Wilhelm, Clinton’s campaign manager, briefly as he talks with people.
6:58 The debate begins. Weinberg shoots the press monitors and th e journalists at work. (He is not in the same room where the debate is actually happening.) The audio is relatively hard to understand as it is echoing all over the gymnasium.
30:00 Paul Begala reviews the debate for us.
35:36 Jack Kemp, U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, discu sses the debate and is susprisingly even-handed in his evaluation of the candidates’ showings, although is very fussy in dealing with reporters.
44:49 Weinberg interviews White House press secretary Marlin Fitzwater, who lists all the statements made by Clinton that he disagrees with. He describes Clinton as “reckless” on foreign policy.
49:55 Weinberg interviews Ross Perot, Jr., who is very enthusiastic about his father’s showing in the debate and does a promo for The 90’s.
51:30 Bill Clinton’s nephew (?) is interviewed.
53:45 Andy Aultz, who is in charge of telecommunications for the Clinton team, briefly praises Andy Sohn, who showed The 90’s the Clinton campaign’s computers and cellular telephones (on another tape).
